Playa del Inglés takes a decisive step toward the decarbonization of the tourism sector with the launch of ConnectHeat Costa Canaria, the first renewable energy community designed specifically for tourism in Spain and one of the pioneering initiatives at the European level. The project has been presented by the Federation of Hospitality and Tourism Entrepreneurs of Las Palmas (FEHT) and the Canary Islands Institute of Technology (ITC).
The initiative is structured as a non-profit cooperative, bringing together small and medium-sized tourism enterprises, homeowners’ associations, accommodation establishments, residential buildings, and the FEHT itself as the coordinating entity.
Unlike conventional energy communities focused on electricity generation, ConnectHeat is based on a thermal heating and cooling network powered by geothermal energy.
ConnectHeat Costa Canaria aligns with the regional strategy for energy transition and the strengthening of tourism resilience. If successfully consolidated, the model could be replicated in other mature destinations across the Archipelago, positioning Gran Canaria as a leader in urban thermal energy communities.
