THE CLIMAR PROJECT LED BY THE UNESCO CHAIR IN TOURISM AND SUSTAINABLE ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT AND GLOBAL OBREAL HOLDS ITS FIRST TRAINING AT THE NATIONAL UNIVERSITY OF COLOMBIA

The first training on tourism research, climate change and circular economy of the CLIMAR project was held at the National University of Colombia (UNC, Bogotá Campus) on 21, 22 and 23 November 2023. The main objective of the European project “Strengthening Research, Innovation and Knowledge Transfer on Climate Change & Tourism in Higher Education Institutions in Latin America (CLIMAR)” is to promote research, innovation, knowledge transfer and continuous professional development in a transversal way, contributing to the adaptation of tourism activities to climate change and the mitigation of the impacts of the tourism sector; it should be noted that CLIMAR was the only project approved by the European Commission in the section “GREAN DEAL” (green pact) for Latin America in 2022. The project is led by our colleagues Javier de León Ledesma and Domingo Verano Tacoronte (University Institute of Tourism and Sustainable Economic Development and UNESCO Chair of Tourism and Sustainable Economic Development of the ULPGC) and OBREAL Global.

As project coordinators we would like to congratulate our UNC colleagues Javier Toro, Gabriela Arrieta and Fernando Liven for the excellent work done.

This first training, entitled “Climate Change, Impact Chains and Regenerative Tourism”, was fortunate to have the following speakers, all of them PhDs, partners of the CLIMAR project:

  • Matías M. González Hernández (University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria), who gave two online talks under the titles “Circular economy as a driver of tourism decarbonization” and “Tourism adaptation to climate change: the impact chain approach”.
  • Paolo Figini (University of Bologna), with the paper “The socioeconomi cimpacts of Tourism”.
  • Javier Toro (National University of Colombia), with a workshop entitled “Impacts, vulnerability and resilience in the relationship between tourism and climate change”.
  • Liven Fernando Martínez (Universidad Nacional de Colombia), with a workshop entitled “Application of complex networks for the analysis of the tourism sector”.
  • Gabriela Arrieta Loyo (National University of Colombia), with the paper “Environmental Sanitation, Circularity and Rural Tourism in Colombia”.
  • Jesús Olivero Verbel (University of Cartagena), with a workshop on “Project development in the context of tourism and climate change”.

We would like to thank all the speakers for their time, dedication and affection for their seminar/workshop.

The next training will be held at Cork University in April 2024. We are still moving forward. See you soon in Ireland!
