JUST CLIMATE TRANSITION PROJECT (TRANCLIJUS-ECO)

At the Institute of Tourism and Sustainable Economic Development of the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, and under the UNESCO Chair on Tourism and Sustainable Economic Development, the project “JUST CLIMATE TRANSITION: ECONOMIC EVALUATION OF PREFERENCES USING DISCRETE CHOICE MODELS WITH APPLICATIONS TO ENERGY AND TOURISM (TRANCLIJUS-ECO), TED2021-131848B-I00” has been developed. The project is funded by the Spanish Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities and the State Research Agency, with resources from the European Union’s NextGenerationEU/PRTR funds.

Climate and energy transition in the context of climate change poses the challenge of potentially generating adverse impacts on certain social groups, who may be displaced or left behind in the adoption of energy innovations and, as a result, may experience a reduction in their socioeconomic well-being. The main objective of the project is to evaluate social preferences regarding public policies aimed at achieving greater climate justice in the energy and climate transition, using stated preference techniques and discrete choice models.

The evidence obtained highlights the economic value that citizens assign to climate change and energy transition policies, showing that perceptions of injustice in the climate and energy transition lead to a lower willingness to accept and support policies aimed at combating climate change and promoting the energy transition. A key implication is that perceived injustice in the energy transition may delay the adoption of innovations that contribute to addressing climate change.
